What a drain-down includes
- Water off and drainedThe water supply is turned off and the system is drained, so the pipes are not left full over winter.
- Blown throughThe pipework is blown through to clear the water that sits in low spots and will not drain on its own.
- Tagged and loggedThe caravan is tagged as drained and the job is logged, so you have a record that it was done and when.
Why it matters
Water left in a caravan over winter freezes, expands and splits pipes and fittings, often under the floor where you cannot see it. The first you know is a leak when the water goes back on in spring.
Most static caravan insurers expect the caravan to be drained down over winter when it is not being used. Check your policy for the dates that apply to you.

Common questions
How much does a caravan drain-down cost?
A winter drain-down is £70 per caravan or lodge. Bulk bookings on parks are discounted.
When should a static caravan be drained down?
Before the first hard frost, once you have finished using it for the season. Bookings fill up quickly in autumn, so book early.
What happens if a caravan is not drained down?
Any water left in the pipes can freeze and split them. Repairs to burst pipes under the floor cost far more than a drain-down, and your insurer may not pay if the caravan was not drained.
Can you turn the water back on in spring?
Yes. A spring refill puts the water back on, checks for leaks and recommissions the heating.
